nbn isn’t the only fibre broadband network in Australia. Some homes and businesses are connected to alternative fibre networks operated independently of nbn. These networks can be found in new developments, apartment complexes, business areas, regional communities and locations where private fibre networks have been deployed. In some locations, an alternative fibre network may also be the designated Statutory Infrastructure Provider (SIP) responsible for providing broadband infrastructure in that area.
Is Alternate Fibre Available at My Address?

How do Alternate Fibre Networks Work ?
Alternative fibre networks use fibre infrastructure to connect premises to broadband services. Some operate as wholesale networks, where consumers purchase an internet service from a participating Retail Service Provider (RSP). Other networks may have different arrangements. The network available at your premises will determine which providers, plans and speeds you can choose from.
Choosing a Provider and Plan
Once you identify an alternative fibre network that may service your premises:
- Check your address with the network operator.
- Find out which RSPs or providers offer services over the network.
- Compare plans, speeds, pricing, equipment and customer support.
- Check any connection, installation or equipment costs before ordering.
REMEMBER: Not every internet provider offers services over every fibre network.
The providers, plans and speeds available will depend on the particular fibre network serving your premises. When comparing your options, consider download and upload speeds, typical peak performance, ongoing price, equipment, installation costs, contracts and customer support. If you need a voice service, check whether one is available and what equipment is required.
