An nbn Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) connection is a fixed line broadband connection. It works via a fibre optic line that is run from the nearest available fibre node, directly to your premises.
Nbn FTTP is gold star connectivity, it will allow for a greater choice of plans and providers, faster speeds and better reliability.
Upgrades due to nbn grant programs
nbn FTTP roll-outs are joint projects between nbn, the Federal Government and local or state Governments and funded through various grant programs. This webpage mainly describes the process for nbn FTTP roll outs under the Regional Connectivity Program, please note other funded projects may work differently to the processes below.
Round 1 RCP nbn FTTP Projects:
- Alpha, Morven, Augathella & Surat in Queensland
- Geeveston in Tasmania
- Halls Creek in Western Australia
- Hopetoun, Kaniva, Murchison, Teesdale, Timboon, Birregurra & Rushworth in Victoria
- Wudinna & Lewiston East in South Australia
- Yirrkala in Northern Territory
Round 2 RCP nbn FTTP Projects:
- Boulia, Cunnamulla, Quilpie and Julia Creek in Queensland
- Fitzroy Crossing, Onslow, Ravensthorpe and Mullewa in Western Australia
- Lameroo and Pinnaroo in South Australia
- Sea Lake in Victoria
Other funding programs include the North Queensland Telecommunications and Energy Improvement Grants (TIEP) (Bowen QLD), NT Government & nbn (Jabiru, NT) and Victoria Government and nbn (multiple locations across regional Victoria).
A map of the locations can be found here (map last updated February 2023, more announcements have been made since then and will be added to the map soon, in the meantime, check here to see if your town is now included, if it is not on the map.)

Nbn FTTN to FTTP Upgrades
Nbn are also upgrading parts of the nbn Fibre to the Node (FTTN) network to nbn Fibre to the Premise (FTTP). The map above uses the data provided here, locations are mapped on suburb/town and state details, so are estimates only. To be eligible for these upgrades consumers need to place an order for a higher speed plan.
An updated list of localities getting a FTTN to FTTP upgrade can be found here: https://tinyurl.com/nbnFTTPUpgrades
Nbn FTTP will provide both your broadband (internet) and voice (landline) connection to businesses and residences. Your existing copper line (if you have one, will be disconnected approximately 18 months after the network roll out is complete). You can check here if your residence / business is included in the roll-out.

There are several steps to be completed before you can connect. Nbn have more details here
STAGE ONE: SCOPING / SITE SURVEY
Scoping by the company contracted to roll out the infrastructure (Ventia) will begin. You should receive:
- a mail out to your residence / business about the project and
- a visit to your residence/business by Ventia, if you weren’t home you should have received a flyer similar to this below.

Once scoping has commenced in your town, if you haven’t supplied Ventia with your details (when they visited your residence or via the phone number left on the flyer), you need to do so via this link:
It is VERY important that you do register your address as this gives Ventia authority to install the nbn FTTP equipment at your address.
STAGE TWO: CONSTRUCTION
Technicians will be required to install equipment within the boundary of your property and roll out the fibre lines. This may involve constructing additional pits and hauling cable through underground pipes, digging and/or drilling under footpaths, on nature strips and private property where necessary.
What equipment will be installed at my house or business?
There will be equipment installed both inside (nbn connection box) and on the outside (nbn utility box) of your premises. The inside box will contain the Network Termination Device (NTD) and will need to be plugged into a standard powerpoint. The diagram below indicates the location and dimensions of the equipment.

Ventia will arrange a suitable time with you to install the internal equipment. External equipment can take place while you are not at home, however, all equipment is usually installed on the one day. In some instances, the installation team may need to fix, replace, or install the lead-in conduit from the Council nature strip to the side of your dwelling. If necessary, this will be discussed with you prior to work commencing. There is NO charge for the equipment to be installed and you DO NOT have to sign up to a contract with a provider to have the equipment installed.
This nbn video We’re Coming To Install Your Fibre. Here’s What To Expect shows the steps involved.
You can read more about the installation process here.
NB: If your community is being upgraded to nbn FTTP as a result of one of the grant programs, the installation process will look a little different. You do NOT need to contact a provider to have the equipment installed, the battery backup units will not be installed by Ventia. If it is a nbn FTTn to nbn FTTP upgrade you will need to talk to a provider as your first step to get connected to nbn FTTP
STAGE THREE: CONNECTION
Once the equipment has been installed and tested, you will be notified and be able to place an order with your preferred provider. A tip sheet on getting connected to nbn FTTP is available here. Provider’s are also often called RSP’s (Retail Service Providers) or ISP’s (Internet Service Providers).
